Early Care for Puppies and KittensGet your pet's life off on the right start with preventive care and vaccinations from Northwest Animal Hospital. Before your puppy or kitten is exposed to other pets, a complete examination for congenital problems and infectious diseases is highly recommended. Our examination will also help us set a schedule for vaccinations and give you a chance to discuss proper pet care with our staff and to get answers to any questions you have. Recommended Vaccines and ExamsIn most cases, puppies and kittens should receive a series of vaccines starting at 6 to 8 weeks of age and continuing every 3 weeks until they are at least 16 weeks old. At the same time, our staff will conduct a fecal exam and deworming for intestinal parasites. For kittens, additional tests for Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) will be conducted through simple bloodwork. The recommended vaccines for indoor cats are the Rabies Vaccine and the FVRCP vaccine which covers a number of respiratory infections. After the first year of life, 3 year vaccines are available. For outdoor cats, we also recommend Feline Leukemia Vaccine which is administered yearly. For puppies, the recommended vaccines include Rabies Vaccine and DHLPP which includes a number of viruses and bacterial infections. After the first year, some of these vaccines can be given every 3 years. However, some are only available as one year vaccines. For dogs who have an active social life and frequent facilities such as boarding, grooming, classes, or dog parks, we recommend the Bordetella (Kennel Cough) vaccine which is given yearly. Dogs will also have an annual heartworm test and stool check done to detect a number of parasites. A Lifetime of Attentive CareAs your pet matures, annual or biannual physical examinations will provide early detection and treatment of problems. Our pets age faster than we do. For this reason, it is especially important to keep up on these exams to detect health concerns early. At each annual visit, we will keep your pet up-to-date on vaccinations, fecal exams, heartworm testing and we'll also dispense preventive medications.
Special Care for Senior Cats and DogsAs we focus on the problems of your senior companions, we schedule geriatric exams as needed. These exams may include procedures such as lab work, EKGs, and x-rays, all designed to help us diagnose common geriatric conditions.
Early diagnosis and treatment can result in a longer, better quality of life for your pet. We offer three levels of geriatric pet exams. Please call (402) 572-1280 for details. |
